Medical Center
Home to the School of Medicine, Duke University Medical Center encompasses 94 buildings on 210 acres and employs around 9,000 people full-time, including some 1,600 faculty physicians and researchers. The Medical Center is consistently ranked among the top 10 of some 5,500 American hospitals by U.S.News & World Report, with 13 out of 16 specialties ranked among the nation's top 20 in 2007. The physicians of Duke University Health System--who see more than 60,000 inpatients and 1.3 million outpatient visits each year--include nationally recognized doctors in every area of medicine.
Our faculty have also made Duke University one of the nation's top sites for biomedical research, with more than $407 million in NIH-sponsored research in 2006.
At Duke, patient care doesn't stop at the Medical Center boundaries. The Duke University Health System (DUHS), one of nation's first fully integrated academic health care systems, encompasses not only the original tertiary-care hospital and specialty clinics on the Medical Center campus, but two community hospitals, home health and hospice services, a widespread network of primary care physicians, and other partners across North Carolina and southern Virginia.
That growth is good news for our medical students -- many do clinical rotations in these community-based settings, gaining experience across the spectrum of health services.
